MVB | Wesmen roll through winless Griffins

The Winnipeg Wesmen are highly interested in stringing together some wins right about now, and the MacEwan Griffins obliged Friday night.

The Wesmen had a season-high for a three-set match and closed things out in their fastest game of the season, dropping the Griffins 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-13) in a Canada West conference match at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen had nine aces, their third highest total of the season and their most in a three-set match since scoring 14 against Brandon on Feb. 19, 2022.

The Griffins are now 0-17 and they were just the thing the Wesmen needed to snap out of a one-win-one-loss stretch that dates back to November. The Wesmen won back-to-back matches for the first time since a series sweep over UBC Nov. 3-4.

In their past three series, the Wesmen have split the weekends, but Friday's win marked the third in the past four conference outings.

The Wesmen held MacEwan to .026 attacking, the second straight match the Griffins have been held to under .100 on offence as they suffered their 11th straight-sets loss of the season.

Liam Kristjanson had 13 kills to lead the Wesmen (10-7) who sit in seventh in the Canada West. Isaiah Olfert had 10 kills, and Thomas Kiesman had a career-high 14 digs, which topped all players.

Mitchel Gorman's five kills led the Griffins.

The two teams will face each other at 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets can be ordered on wesmen.ca/tickets.
