The Winnipeg Wesmen are going to need to find a string of wins to close the conference season if they hope to see the second season.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team was held to negative attacking in the second and third sets and dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-17) Canada West conference decision to the MacEwan Griffins Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.Â
The loss put the Wesmen at 6-10 on the season and squarely outside the eight-team playoff picture with eight matches remaining. Six of those upcoming contests are against teams currently in playoff position, making the stretch run not only decisive, but daunting as well.Â
On Saturday, the Wesmen looked mostly listless hitting -.054 in the second and -.029 in the third after what was a promising performance in the first, albeit in a losing cause.Â
The Wesmen hit .333 with 13 kills and only four errors in the first, but mustered only 14 kills the rest of the way while adding 17 errors.Â
MacEwan (11-7) hit .260 for the match including .400 in the decisive third set.Â
Brooke Duncalfe had nine kills to lead the Wesmen and
Jaya Dzikowicz added eight.
Taylor Cangemi had a match-high 16 digs.Â
Mariah Bereziuk led the Griffins with 13 kills and Arden Butler had 12 digs.
The Wesmen are on the road next weekend to take on the Fraser Valley Cascades in a pair of matches that were rescheduled after the Wesmen were unable to travel last weekend.Â
