The Winnipeg Wesmen threw a lot of looks at the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Saturday night.
Ten players appeared in at least two sets as the Wesmen men's volleyball team cooked up a 3-1 (28-30, 26-24, 28-26, 25-22) Canada West conference win at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Three outside hitters —
Nigel Nielsen,
Isaiah Olfert and
Liam Kristjanson — combined for 82 per cent of the team's kills as the Wesmen (8-6) earned a weekend split.Â
Nielsen and Olfert both had 17 kills, with Olfert adding a team-high 10 digs, and Kristjanson knocked down 10 kills as the Wesmen hit .288 for the night.Â
The Wesmen, despite losing Set 1, were nonetheless resilient in forcing it to extra points. They trailed 24-21 before kills by
Ethan Duncan and
Nigel Nielsen, followed by an ace from
Alex Krykewich tied it at 24. They held three set points before the Wolfpack (5-7) tore off three straight from 27-28 down.Â
Winnipeg broke a 22-22 tie in the second set by winning four of the next five points, and shook off a 17-13 deficit in the third set.
Sam Flowerday's 17 kills led TRU, which got 16 more from Matthew Hamilton and 15 from Rylan Ibbetson. Dylan VanSpankeren had a match-high 17 digs.
TRU hit .271 for the night.Â
