WBB | Guinto's career-high paces Wesmen past BU

BRANDON — Just when it looked like the Brandon Bobcats might be in position to steal an upset, the Winnipeg Wesmen found a run.

A big run.

The Wesmen women's basketball team broke the game wide open with a 33-12 second-half run that led to an 84-65 Canada West conference victory Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre.

Winnipeg improved to 3-9 with its second straight win ahead of two games Friday and Saturday at home against Alberta.

The Bobcats pulled to within two at 49-47 on a Piper Ingalls three with just under six minutes to go in the third, but the Wesmen held BU without a field goal for the next 2:28 and closed the quarter on a 17-6 run.

Winnipeg would push the lead to as many as 23 midway through the fourth as the Wesmen secured their first back-to-back wins of the season.

Raia Guinto had a career-high 24 points and added three more steals to her total a night after grabbing a career-high five. Anna Kernaghan hit for 19 points, including 4-for-5 from three. Kernaghan finished the weekend making eight of 11 from the three-point line. Kernaghan also had six assists.

Carmen Hiebert had a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds, and Sarah Boitson had a career-high 12 boards.

The Bobcats (0-12) got 18 points from Faith Clearsky, 14 from Ingalls and 10 from Reeta Tulkki.
