The UBC Thunderbirds jumped out early and claimed a convincing victory on Day 1 of the Canada West conference women's volleyball season.
Lucy Borowski had 12 kills and the Thunderbirds opened conference play with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-23) victory at the Duckworth Centre.
In Set 3, the T-Birds overcame deficits of 21-18 and 22-20, rallying with five straight points to finish the match.
Akash Grewaly added six kills and Jocelyn Lenarcic five for the Thunderbirds, who held Winnipeg to -.026 attacking in the first set and .103 overall.
Grace Vallis topped the Wesmen with nine kills while
Jaya Dzikowicz had eight and
Selva Planincic six.
Olivia Furlan and Trinity Solecki topped UBC with 10 digs while
Taylor Cangemi had a match-high 15 for the Wesmen.
The T-Birds hit .258 in the second set and finished .192 for the match while adding nine aces to Winnipeg's one. Grewal had five of those service aces.
