Box Score The Winnipeg Wesmen bounced back in a big way Saturday night.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team set two program records for fewest points allowed and dominated the Regina Cougars with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-6) Canada West conference victory at the Duckworth Centre.
The three-set triumph was just what the Wesmen needed after a disappointing five-set defeat a night earlier in which the Cougars (3-5) came back from two sets down to pull off a reverse sweep.
And not only did the Wesmen respond with one of their best matches of the season, they did so in historic fashion. The six points in the third set were the fewest allowed in a set in Wesmen history and the 37 points scored by Regina set the standard for fewest points allowed in a match in the 25-point era of Wesmen Volleyball.Â
It was the first time the Wesmen held a team to under 10 points in a set since Thompson Rivers scored eight in a Wesmen sweep Feb. 8, 2013 and just the third time in the past 17 years a team failed to make it to double digits in a set. Winnipeg held Simon Fraser to nine points in a three-set sweep Nov. 23, 2007.Â
The Wesmen posted a season-high .358 attacking on the night committing just eight errors on 95 swings while scoring 42 kills. It was the program's highest attack efficiency since the Wesmen hit .371 in a win over Thompson Rivers, Nov. 7, 2015.
Selva Planincic led a diverse Wesmen offence with a match-high 15 kills while committing just one error to finish with a season-high .560 attacking.
Brooke Duncalfe added nine kills with 11 digs, and
Taylor Cangemi posted her second straight match with double-digit digs with a match-high 15.
Winnipeg improved to 2-4 on the season with a trip to MacEwan (0-6) next weekend.Â
Regina was held to .062 attacking and never threatened once the sets hit double digits.Â
In the third set, the Wesmen took a 2-2 tie and peeled off seven straight points with Duncalfe on the service line. After the Cougars got a point back, Winnipeg then scored the next four to go up 13-3, but the most impressive one was still to come. With Winnipeg leading 13-4,
Ella Werbiski served the Wesmen on a nine-point run that included three aces. Werbiski finished the match with a career-high five aces.Â
Devyn Grimsrud led the Cougars with eight kills and Cassadi Klapak had a team-high 10 digs.Â
