MVB: Wesmen set program standard for hottest start with win over Griffins

EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Wesmen are off to the hottest start in program history.

Luke Lodewyks had a match-high 10 kills and Paxton Koop had no errors as the Wesmen men's volleyball team breezed by the MacEwan Griffins 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-22) in a Canada West conference match Friday afternoon at the David Atkinson Gymnasium.

Koop had seven kills on 10 swings to hit .700 as the Wesmen improved to 7-0, the first time they've started a Canada West season with seven straight wins since they joined the conference in 1997.

The Wesmen hit .368 for the match, the fifth time this season they've hit above .300. They made only one error in the second set and attacked at .533, the second-highest efficiency in a set they've posted this season.

Lodewyks hit .500 and added four aces and tied libero Carson Brennan with a match-high seven digs. Isaiah Olfert, who had led the Wesmen in kills in each of their first six matches, had seven and hit .357 with two aces.

All told, 13 Wesmen players got into the match, with true freshman Levi Unger notching five kills on nine swings, the first points in his U Sports career.

The Wesmen flipped the scoreboard in the first set by winning 11 of 12 points and taking a 6-5 deficit and turning it into a 16-7 advantage.

In the second set, the Wesmen once again had an early stretch that essentially turned the set in their favour. They broke a 3-3 tie by winning seven out of eight points and MacEwan couldn't closer than 14-11 before the Wesmen tore off an eight-point run to push it to 22-11.

Mitchell Croft led the Griffins with 10 kills.
