WVB: Wesmen take down Griffins, run win streak to 3

EDMONTON — A well-timed win streak has the Winnipeg Wesmen in the top half of the Canada West conference.

Selva Planincic had 15 kills and a season-high three aces and the Wesmen women's volleyball team won its third straight match, knocking off the MacEwan Griffins 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17) Saturday afternoon.

The Wesmen improved to 4-4 and in a tie for sixth place with Manitoba in the conference standings as they head into a bye week with Mount Royal looming Nov. 28-29 at the Duckworth Centre.

On Saturday, the Set 3 loss was the first one Winnipeg has dropped in its last three matches, but it was ultimately just a blip.

The Wesmen hit .207 for the match and responded to the third-set loss by ripping off four straight points to start the fourth. They led 7-2 and stretched the lead to seven and maintained that healthy edge through the bulk of the fourth.

Setter Breanne Bazin had a career-high 12 digs and dished out 42 assists, which is tied for fourth in the Canada West this season for most assists in a four-set match.

Ella Werbiski added 11 kills on 18 swings with no errors (.611), and Grace Vallis and Brooke Duncalfe both notched 10 kills with Duncalfe adding eight digs. Emily Lavallee had seven kills and added a career-high three aces, part of 10 on the day for the Wesmen. Winnipeg has had double-digit aces in three of its past four matches.

Taylor Cangemi had a match-high 16 digs, her fourth-straight match in double digits and the fifth in the past six.

Planincic's four aces during the weekend sweep pushed her to three shy of the 100 mark for her career.

MacEwan (0-8) got 14 kills from Arden Butler and 12 from Alyshia Bryks.
