MVB | Wesmen look dominant again, run record to 6-0

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — That is more what the Winnipeg Wesmen are used to looking like.

A night after having to fight off an upset bid in a five-set victory, the Wesmen men's volleyball team took care of business in a much quicker manner, sweeping the Fraser Valley Cascades 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) in a Canada West conference match Saturday night.

The win kept the Wesmen in first place in the conference at 6-0 as they remain one of two undefeated teams left in the conference, percentage points ahead of 4-0 Alberta, which was on the bye. The Wesmen are also the first team in U Sports to record six wins this season.

While they had to battle and rally to win in five on Friday, the Wesmen were much more clinical on Saturday, if not at their finest. They attacked at .257 for the night, the first time in their last five matches they'd hit under .300, and made 10 attack errors in the first set when they needed a late run to pull away.

The Wesmen scored three straight points with the game tied at 19 in the first to gain control only to see the Cascades eventually threaten again by pulling to 23-22 down.

But Winnipeg would make only nine attack errors the rest of the match as the Wesmen hit .483 in the second and .345 in the third.

For the sixth straight match, Isaiah Olfert led the Wesmen in kills with 15, while Luke Lodewyks notched 12. Olfert also had three aces and five digs.

The Wesmen are now 5-1 all-time against the Cascades, who fell to 0-6.

Roan McCarthy had seven kills and hit .429 to lead UFV.

The Wesmen are on the bye this weekend before a trip to Edmonton Nov. 15-16 where they will meet the MacEwan Griffins. Winnipeg's last matches of the first semester will then Nov. 29-30 dates at home to Mount Royal.
