WBB: Third-quarter surge lifts Wesmen past Griffins

A substantial third-quarter spurt led the Winnipeg Wesmen to their first weekend sweep of the Canada West season.

The Wesmen women's basketball team outscored the MacEwan Griffins 25-9 in the third quarter and held on for a 66-57 win Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The two teams, who were separated by just five points in a Wesmen win on Friday, were once again nose-to-nose coming out of halftime before the Wesmen tore off 15 straight points over the span 5:01 of the third.

The run would balloon to 20-3 as the Wesmen took a 53-36 with 48 seconds to go before the quarter break. Winnipeg shot 10 free throws to MacEwan's two in that third quarter and, for the game, got to the line 25 times while the Griffins only shot four on the night.

The Griffins outscored Winnipeg 19-13 in the fourth but got no closer than seven.

Jazmin Birch led the Wesmen with 14 points and Raia Guinto added 11.

The Wesmen made just 2 of 13 from three but they forced 26 MacEwan turnovers and scored 23 points off them.

The Wesmen were also buoyed by a season-high 32 bench points with Birch leading the way.

MacEwan (0-6) was led by Unity Obasuyi's game-high 20 points and Toni Gordon scored 13. Samantha Hickey had 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
