Box Score ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen will take a split out of their first road weekend of the Canada West season.
The No. 2-ranked Fraser Valley Cascades were dominant a night after a major upset and controlled the play in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-17) conference victory over the Wesmen women's volleyball team Saturday night.
The Wesmen were forced to settle for a weekend split against the previously-undefeated Cascades, who they beat in five Friday night in the first major upset of the U Sports season.
The Wesmen were held to -.010 attacking and never found their footing against an invigorated UFV team that improved to 5-1 on the season. Winnipeg fell to 1-3 with home matches against Regina next up (Nov. 8-9).
Winnipeg managed just 19 kills the entire night — against 20 errors — and hit in the negatives in two of the three sets.
Jaya Dzikowicz and
Selva Planincic both had five kills with Planincic adding a team-high 12 digs.
Talia Attieh posted a match-high 14 kills for the Cascades, and Emily Matsui led three UFV players in double-digit digs with 13. Lauren Attieh had 12 and Mandi Feist 11.
The Wesmen now return home to meet the 2-4 Cougars for a critical early-season series. The Cougars already have wins against Saskatchewan and Calgary this season and come to Winnipeg just months removed from upsetting the Wesmen in the final match of last season, which eliminated Winnipeg's playoff hopes.
Prior to the Nov. 8 match (6 p.m.), a moment of silence will be held for former U of W athletic director Doran Reid, who passed away last week in Ottawa.
