And then there was one.
The Winnipeg Wesmen men's volleyball team rallied after a first-set loss and defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22) in a Canada West conference match Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen improved to 9-0 and continued the best start in program history while — thanks to losses by Alberta and Sherbrooke on Friday — standing alone as the only remaining undefeated team in U Sports men's volleyball.
And the Wesmen were surely not at their finest to start the match, committing seven attack errors in the first set and 13 combined in Sets 1 and 2. But they made just six the rest of the way as they took over the match, attacking at .333 in the third set, .452 in the fourth and .272 for the match.
Isaiah Olfert had 20 kills, the second time this season he's reached that threshold, while matching a career-high six aces, which is a season-high across the Canada West.
The Wesmen started rounding into form in the second set, setting the tone with an early 7-3 lead and extending to as many as seven later in the set. The third set was similar: An early five-point run buoyed by three straight aces gave Winnipeg a 7-2 lead and the Wesmen pushed it to as many as 10 and MRU never really got back in it.
In Set 4, MRU hung around to 15-14 down before another run, this time four straight with three kills from Olfert, put the home side in control and sent the Cougars into timeout.
Luke Lodewyks had 11 kills and match-high 10 digs for his first career double-double. Middle blockers
Paxton Koop and
Easton Dick both had six kills and combined to hit .579 with just one error between them.
The Cougars (2-7) were led by Ryan John's 17 kills, while Grant Hill had a team-high seven digs.
