WVB: Big bounce-back falls short as Wesmen clipped by Cougars

The Winnipeg Wesmen looked like they were on their way to one of those comebacks that can define a season.

The Wesmen women's volleyball team came back from 24-22 down in the fourth set and held a two-point edge in the fifth only to fall 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 26-24, 13-15) to the Mount Royal Cougars in a Canada West conference match Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen (5-5) rolled through the first set hitting .435 with 13 kills and early on made it seem as though it could be a quick-work weekend.

But the Cougars forced the Wesmen into nine attack errors — and .000 attacking — in Set 2, and had 13 kills of their own in the third to take a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth, the Wesmen led by as many as three before the Cougars put together a stretch of winning six out of seven points that gave them a 20-17 advantage. Trailing 22-19, the Wesmen scored the next three points with Brooke Duncalfe notching two aces. MRU then notched the next two points to get to match point.

The Wesmen stormed back, though, with Selva Planincic getting a kill and a block, and Jaya Dzikowicz subbing in with an ace as part of a four-point run that forced a fifth.

In Set 5, Winnipeg got the first breakthrough after 10 points of side-out. The Wesmen scored back-to-back points to make it 12-10, only to see MRU score two straight of its own to once again lock it at 12. Emily Lavallee's kill made it 13-12 for the Wesmen, but Mount Royal had one last push and scored three straight to earn the weekend split.

Brooke Duncalfe's 16 kills and 15 digs paced the Wesmen, who got 10 kills from Planincic and 12 digs from Ella Werbiski.

Sydney Scatcherd had 17 kills to lead MRU (5-5) and Bronwynn Davies-Neira added 14.
