All good things must come to an end. Even winning streaks.
The Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball team saw its 16-year string of success against the Manitoba Bisons snapped Thursday in a 73-66 Canada West conference setback at the Duckworth Centre.
It was Manitoba's first conference win over the Wesmen since a 54-48 victory on Jan. 3, 2008, a stretch of 22 conference games.
The Wesmen were held without a point for the final 4:58 of the fourth quarter as the Bisons closed the game on an 11-2 run.
Carmen Hiebert's layup with 4:59 made it 66-65 for the Wesmen (5-12), but Winnipeg wasn't able to convert beyond that.
Jazmin Birch scored a career-high 17 points in 14 minutes to lead the Wesmen. The freshman was 7-for-11 from the field, 2-for-2 from three and added four rebounds.
Raia Guinto scored 16 points and had a career-high seven rebounds.
Birch was named the Wesmen game MVP as the game served as the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge, the annual rivalry series between the two schools. Emerson Martin, who topped Manitoba with 20 points and eight rebounds, was named U of M's game MVP.
Mar Tomas Arbos added 11 points for the Bisons (5-12) and Emily Johnson had 10 with nine rebounds.
The loss didn't greatly impact Winnipeg's playoff positioning: The Wesmen stayed in 12th in the 12-team playoff picture, but the Bisons managed to vault into 11th with both teams having three games to play.
The two teams meet again Saturday at U of M at 2 p.m.
