Taylor Cangemi has been honoured by the Canada West conference for her commitment in the classroom and in the community.
Cangemi, a third-year libero with the Winnipeg Wesmen women's volleyball team, was named the Canada West conference's Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner as the conference unveiled its major awards for the 2023-24 season.Â
One of the top liberos in the country, Cangemi has extended her tireless work to off the court where she is an exceptional student carrying a 4.49/4.5 GPA. A Biology major from Calgary, Cangemi has embraced off-season research opportunities that extend into conservation and wildlife ecology.Â
She has spent the past two summers giving her time to the North American Society for Bat Research (NASBR), promoting the study and conservation of bats. She also presented at the 2023 North American Symposium and has spent many hours presenting on wildlife ecology at local schools through public outreach programs. This summer she has committed to participating in a Sea Turtle Internship at Caño Palma Research Station in Costa Rica, where she will gain experience with an international research team.
Cangemi is always a willing participant in volunteerism, offering her time at a number of sport camps throughout the season. She has also been a voice for student-athletes on campus, volunteering in the Wesmen student-athlete council and in EDI-related initiatives put forth by the athletics department.Â
"Taylor is an incredible young woman. She is a dedicated student-athlete who trains towards personal excellence in all aspects of her life," Wesmen head coach Phil Hudson said. "She commits herself to improving as a U Sports athlete at every practice and off-court training situation. Her dedication in the classroom has allowed her to be recognized as an Academic All-Canadian in all four years at the University of Winnipeg."
Cangemi will now be put forth as the Canada West nominee for the U Sports national award.Â
