Men's Basketball

Wesmen Basketball to open with rare one-off in 24-25

It will be an unprecedented start to the Canada West conference season for the Winnipeg Wesmen basketball teams.

For the first time, the Wesmen men's and women's teams will play only one game in a weekend to begin their 2024-25 seasons, the conference announced Wednesday in revealing the schedules for the upcoming seasons.

The Wesmen will travel to Brandon to meet the Bobcats in their season-opener Friday, Nov. 1 and then will not play again until a road trip to Mount Royal Nov. 15-16.

New conference alignment in 2024-25 means the Wesmen will play the Bobcats and Manitoba Bisons three times, creating the season-opening one-off. The Wesmen will then have a bye week in Week 2.

The Bobcats come to Winnipeg in the penultimate weekend of the season, Feb. 7-8.

The Bisons, meanwhile, will be at the Duckworth Centre on Dec. 5, and then the two sides will square off with a home-and-home series Jan. 31 at Manitoba and Feb. 1 at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen will play 12 of their 20 conference games in the second semester, and five of their eight contests in the first semester will be on the road.

Winnipeg's home-opener comes Nov. 22-23 against the MacEwan Griffins.

The Wesmen will go through a four-game home stretch to start the 2025 portion of their season and will play seven of their first 10 games in 2025 at home before wrapping the season Feb. 14-15 at Lethbridge.
