The Winnipeg Wesmen got off to a quick start, but the Calgary Dinos showed why they're one of the top teams in Canada.
The Wesmen scored eight of the game's first 10 points and held the Dinos to just one field goal over more than a five-minute span before the visitors responded and eventually pulled of a 66-48 Canada West conference victory Friday at the Duckworth Centre.
After the Wesmen opened the game with their 8-2 run, the Dinos then held Winnipeg (4-5) to one
Carmen Hiebert free throw over the final five minutes as part of a 14-1 run.
Calgary stretched its lead to 38-23 at half, but the Wesmen opened the third quarter with a quick 6-0 burst as part of an 13-2 run to get the deficit down to four at 40-36 with 4:18 to go.
Just as they did in the first, however, the Dinos had a response: They closed the third quarter on a 12-2 spurt and the lead would not get smaller than 12 the rest of the way.
Jazmin Birch had a career-high 20 points to lead the Wesmen and was the lone Winnipeg scorer in double figures.
Anna Kernaghan had a balanced stat line with six points on 3-for-6 shooting, with seven rebounds and six assists.
Sarah Boitson and
Jennifer Kallon both grabbed eight rebounds.
Myriam Kone scored a game-high 22 points to lead the No. 7-ranked Dinos. Mya Proctor and Pollyanna Storie added 13.
The teams will wrap up the weekend on Saturday at 7 p.m. (
