REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen bounced back in a big way on the back end of their season-opening doubleheader.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team made quick work of the Regina Cougars Saturday night, earning a 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-11) Canada West conference victory that leveled its record at 1-1 after opening weekend.
The Wesmen were coming off a five-set loss on Friday in which they led two sets to none before the Cougars pulled off a reverse sweep.
There was no such threat on Saturday, however, as the Wesmen put their foot down and kept it there. They trailed 2-1 to start the first set but eventually tore off a seven-point run to take a 13-4 lead.
In Set 2, Winnipeg built up a 21-16 lead and seemed in control before Regina ran off five of the next six points to cut it to 22-21.
That was the last time Regina put the Wesmen in anything resembling peril.
Winnipeg went on to win the set, opened the third with an 8-3 run and closed the match on an 8-1 stretch.
Grace Vallis had another efficient night knocking down nine kills on .438 attacking while adding five digs and two blocks.
Ella Werbiski had eight kills and a match-high 15 digs, and
Emily Lavallee and
Megan Kendziora both had 11 digs.
Samantha Krausher, who paced the Regina attack on Friday, had seven kills but hit -.038 with eight errors. She was one of four Cougars who were held to negative attacking.
The Wesmen will hit a bye week before their conference home-opener Oct. 31 against Trinity Western.
