The Winnipeg Wesmen streak to start the pre-season has continued into the conference season.
Â
The Wesmen men's basketball team continued its dominance over the Brandon Bobcats Sunday, with an 80-74 Canada West conference win in its home- and season-opener at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Â
Alberto Gordo led the Wesmen with 16 points and
Kato Jaro had 15 points, seven assists and three steals.
Emmanuel Ugbah had 13 points, including a dunk in the final minute that put the salt on the win.
Donald Stewart added 12 points.Â
Â
Despite scoring just nine points in the second quarter, the Bobcats only managed 10 and the Wesmen held a double-digit lead for a large portion of the contest.Â
Â
The Wesmen never trailed and the game was never tied after zeroes, with Winnipeg holding a 71-59 with 3:43 to go. But a quick 7-0 run from the Bobcats cut the lead to five with 1:56 to go.Â
Â
The Bobcats continued to hang around and got it down to four on a Sultan Haider-Bhatti three with 13 seconds to go. On the ensuing inbound, Munroop Gill stole the pass to give Brandon more hope, but Gill was stripped seconds later and Ugbah was freed up for his fastbreak dunk.Â
Â
The Wesmen opened conference play with a win for the fourth straight year and beat the Bobcats for the 27th time in the last 31 conference meetings between the teams. They are 13-1 against BU in their last 14 home contests.Â
Â
The Wesmen, who will head to MacEwan next weekend, won all six non-conference games to start the season and opened Canada West play by handing Brandon its first lost after the Bobcats beat Manitoba on Friday in their season-opener.Â
Â
The Wesmen won the rebounding battle decisively — 52-36 — and had 17 offensive boards to Brandon's seven.
Ryan Luke led the way in that category, matching a career-high with 13 sacks. Â
Â
Haider-Bhatti led the Bobcats with 20 points, Gill and Travis Hamburger both added 17 and Malik Brown scored 10.Â
