WBB: Wesmen left with one last chance to crack post-season

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — The Winnipeg Wesmen hopes of a post-season berth will go down to the final game of the season.

Courtney McKee scored a game-high 25 points and the Lethbridge Pronghorns dominated the second half to hand the Wesmen women's basketball team a 70-47 Canada West conference defeat Friday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

The loss left Winnipeg (7-12) still on the outside looking in on the post-season picture in the Prairie Division. Manitoba's loss to Mount Royal on Friday night means the teams remain tied for the seventh and final post-season spot with the Bisons holding the tiebreaker. The Wesmen will have to win in Saturday's rematch to have hope of claiming the last spot.

The Pronghorns' defense forced 23 turnovers and converted them into 23 points, and U of L held Winnipeg to 25.8 per cent from the field on the night and just four points in the fourth quarter.

The Wesmen were led by Raia Guinto, who finished with 12 points and Jazmin Birch scored 11 with five rebounds off the bench. Anna Kernaghan provided nine points, five assists and four steals.

McKee scored 18 of her 25 points after halftime. Her back-to-back three-pointers early in the fourth quarter pushed Lethbridge's lead to 23, their largest of the night. Kyra Collier added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Pronghorns, while Tobore Okome contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

The Pronghorns took a 20-16 lead after the first quarter and stretched it to 35-29 at halftime.
