WVB: Seniors shine as Wesmen wrap up with win

A dominant performance Saturday gave the Winnipeg Wesmen a sweet Senior Night sweep.

The Wesmen hit .323 for the night and swept the UBCO Heat in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-14) in Canada West women's volleyball action at the Duckworth Centre.

The win, coupled with Trinity Western's victory over Saskatchewan, allowed the Wesmen to move up a spot in the final standings to finish seventh. Winnipeg was already guaranteed a hosting position as the 8-seed, but will now host the No. 10-seed Calgary Dinos in a best-of-three series that starts Thursday at the Duckworth Centre.

The match served as the final conference game for seniors Selva Planincic, Jaya Dzikowicz, Breanne Bazin and Christine Kolbuck. Kolbuck's season was ended with an injury in November but the team nonetheless inserted her into the starting lineup. On crutches, Kolbuck was introduced with the starters and entered the court to start the match before being subbed out for Grace Vallis.

Winnipeg's attack percentage was its second highest of the season and came with just eight attack errors on the night. The Wesmen hit .414 in the third set with no errors. On the night they had 39 kills to UBCO's 28, while also tallying seven service aces and eight total blocks.

Brooke Duncalfe led all scorers with 10 kills while adding three digs and one block. Planincic chipped in with eight kills and a match-high 12 digs, with two service aces, while  Bazin offered up 29 assists with 10 digs. Dzikowicz added eight kills and nine digs while hitting .280, her second-highest efficiency of the season.

For UBCO, Amaya Perry posted a team-high seven kills while Natalie Funk added six kills and three block assists.
