MBB: Wesmen bounce back in big way to bury Bobcats

A night after a heartbreaking loss, the Winnipeg Wesmen made it a point to be the ones dishing out the hurt.

The Wesmen men's basketball team broke out to an 18-point lead just 10 minutes into the game and ran over the Brandon Bobcats with a 95-56 Canada West conference victory at the Duckworth Centre.

The win keeps Winnipeg in a three-way tie for first place with Calgary and Manitoba atop the Prairie Division heading into the final weekend, a road trip to Lethbridge.

The Wesmen, who made nine three-pointers in a loss on Friday, made seven in the first quarter alone on Saturday and finished with a season-high 16.

Lamar Everd got things started just 27 seconds into the game with a triple from the left wing, and the Wesmen never relinquished the lead. Shawn Maranan followed with another three, and by the 7:23 mark, Emmanuel Thomas buried one from deep to extend the advantage to 8-2.

The Bobcats struggled to find their rhythm, missing their first five shots and turning the ball over four times in the opening five minutes. The Wesmen forced Brandon into 2 of 17 shooting in the first quarter.

The Wesmen blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Brandon 34-14. A 10-2 run to start the half, capped by a fast-break layup from Maranan, stretched the lead past 30. Brandon's offense stagnated again, managing just 6-of-14 shooting in the period while committing seven turnovers.

On Senior Night, the veterans certainly came through in a big way: Maranan had a season-high 29 points in 29 minutes before being subbed out with just under four minutes to play; Thomas had 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and Everd added 11 points with five rebounds.

Youri Cange's 13 points led Brandon, while Sultan Haider Bhatti had 11 and 11, but was held to 4-for-11 shooting.

And now mayhem awaits the Wesmen on the final weekend of the season: while the Wesmen head to Lethbridge, the Dinos are in Regina and Manitoba hosts Mount Royal with two hosting spots available and a potential headache of a tiebreaker to determine them.
