Thanks to their own efforts and those of two other teams, the Winnipeg Wesmen still have hopes their season could extend past next weekend.
Raia Guinto delivered a game-high 19 points on 8-of-19 shooting, while Jennifer Kallon added 13 points and three steals to help the Wesmen women's basketball team defeat the Brandon Bobcats 69-63 in Canada West conference play at the Duckworth Centre.
And with the MacEwan Griffins stunning the Manitoba Bisons for their first win of the season — and just their second in the past two — the Wesmen have new life in the chase for the seventh and final post-season spot heading into the final weekend of the season.
The Wesmen improved to 7-11 and into a tie with the Bisons for that seventh position, but Manitoba currently holds a tiebreaker. The Wesmen, who head to Lethbridge Feb. 14-15, will need to do one better in the season final weekend than the Bisons do against Mount Royal to secure the final spot. At 8-10, Lethbridge is also within striking distance.
On Saturday, the Wesmen sent their seniors off on a winning note.
Anna Kernaghan had 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the final game at the Duckworth in her memorable five-year Wesmen career. Sadie McMillan-Stowards matched a season-high with 10 rebounds to go along with eight points and Jennifer Kallon had 13 points and three steals, the third time in four games she's had at least three.
Amaya McLeod led Brandon with 18 points, and six rebounds, and Taya Clark added 11 and five.
