MBB: Wesmen hit century mark to blast Horns

Heading into a key rivalry weekend, the Winnipeg Wesmen are rolling.

Six players scored in double figures as the Wesmen men's basketball team put up 100 points for the first time in more than two years, taking down the Lethbridge Pronghorns 102-62 in a Canada West conference game at the Duckworth Centre Friday night.

The Wesmen (13-3) won their seventh straight and their 10th in the past 11 outings with yet another blowout. Winnipeg kept its opponent under 70 points in the last four games and has outscored its opponents by an average of 27.4 points over the last five games.

Winnipeg sits two games up on Alberta for first place in the Prairie Division ahead of the annual Duckworth Challenge with the Manitoba Bisons that kicks off on Thursday.

Ryan Luke and Donald Stewart both had 17 points to lead the Wesmen. Malachi Alexander had 15 and freshman guard Noah Macalalad scored 13 in just nine minutes, knocking 3 of 4 from three and making 5 of 6 from the field.

Emmanuel Ugbah and Kato Jaro both scored 12, with Jaro — the nation's leader in total assists — dishing out eight dimes.

The Wesmen shot a season-high 54.5 per cent from the field, their best shooting night since making 57.6 per cent in a win over MacEwan, Jan. 7, 2024.

They also went 14-for-31 from three, their best perimeter performance since making 47.6 per cent in a win at Regina, Feb. 10, 2024.

Kymani Pollard had a game-high 22 points to lead the Pronghorns (6-12), and Bryce Solis added 12.

The Wesmen ran out to an early lead with a 20-12 first-quarter edge and expanding that to 53-32 at the half on the strength of forcing nine first-half Lethbridge turnovers.

The Wesmen have won eight in a row against Lethbridge, a streak that dates back to November 2016. This was the Horns first trip to Winnipeg since November 2016.
