WVB: Swept in Edmonton, Wesmen in need of late-season wins

Box Score EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Wesmen currently sit in a playoff position. But, with six matches left, that spot is far from guaranteed.

The Wesmen were swept (25-18, 25-13, 25-18) by the No. 1-ranked Alberta Pandas Saturday and are now in need of making the most of their final Canada West contests if they're going to be in the 10-team post-season that starts next month.

Brooke Duncalfe had nine kills and the Wesmen (5-11) hit .244 for the match, but couldn't find a way to sustain a push against the top team in Canada. Alberta improved to 14-2 by hitting a season-high .447 and by putting the Wesmen in deficits early in each set. The Pandas led 12-7 in the first set, 13-7 in the second, and 14-7 in the third.

Megan Kendziora added eight kills and six digs, and Ella Werbiski had six and six.

Abby Guezen led the Pandas with 13 kills on 16 swings and no errors. She also had five aces and five digs.

The Wesmen now turn their attention to the annual rivalry weekend with the Manitoba Bisons. The Duckworth Challenge runs Thursday through Saturday at the Duckworth Centre and U of M.
