EDMONTON — On a frigid night, the Winnipeg Wesmen couldn't stay hot against the top team in the nation.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team got firing early but couldn't sustain it throughout the night and suffered a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-13) Canada West conference loss to the Alberta Pandas.
The Wesmen (5-10) broke out in a big way in the first set, hitting .455 with 19 kills and just four errors. They used two four-point runs in the set to blaze out to a 17-10 advantage and, after a three-point Pandas run, played side-out volleyball from there to seal the first-set victory.
Winnipeg, however, wouldn't hit better than .200 the rest of the way and finished the night with .204 attacking. The Pandas, meanwhile, were consistent, making just 11 attack errors on the night and finishing with a .292 percentage.
In Set 2, a four-point run and stretch of seven out of eight points gave the Pandas an early stronghold. The Wesmen made one late push, down 24-17, with a four-point run of their own.
Megan Kendziora and
Brooke Duncalfe both had 14 kills and Duncalfe added a team-high 10 digs. Setter
Naomi Unger had 44 assists and chipped in with four kills on six swings.
Abby Guezen had 13 kills and 14 digs for the first-place and No. 1-ranked Pandas, who improved to 13-2.
