EDMONTON — Among two teams that finished just a game apart from each other last season, it was the Winnipeg Wesmen who set the tone Friday night.
Brooke Duncalfe had 16 kills and seven digs, and the Wesmen women's volleyball team rolled over the MacEwan Griffins, winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 28-26) in the teams' Canada West conference opener.
Duncalfe hit .314 and added a solo block as the Wesmen opened the season on a positive note as they look to make the post-season for the sixth time in seven seasons.
Transfer libero Ashley Lawrence made her official Wesmen debut and had a match-high 10 digs.
Right side Megan Kendziora knocked down 12 kills on 17 swings with just two errors (.588) as part of a .333 Wesmen attacking percentage for the night.
Winnipeg also added 13 total blocks to the box score in a road match that was relatively without roadblocks.
The Wesmen took an early advantage with a six-point run in the first set that broke a 6-6 tie. The Griffins were able to cut that lead down to 12-9, but Winnipeg tore off another stretch that gave it a 19-10 lead.
Anna von Krosigk led the Griffins (0-1) with 10 kills but MacEwan was only able to hit .135 for the night.
The teams will meet again Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CT in a match that can be seen on Canada West TV.
