Levi Unger had arguably his finest game in three seasons with the Wesmen men's volleyball team, as Winnipeg handed the Mount Royal Cougars their first loss of the season in a 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 25-20, 25-18) Canada West victory at the Duckworth Centre.
Unger led the team with 18 kills — one off his career-high set last weekend — and amassed five total blocks as the Wesmen rebounded from a sweep the day before to improve to 3-1.
The Cougars, who will host the 2027 men's national championship tournament, had not lost in 12 matches overall, starting 3-0 in conference play and going 9-0 in pre-season with wins over Trinity Western, Alberta and UBC.
Sunday, however, the Wesmen bounced back from a tough first-set loss with a key four-point run in the second set to even the match. In Set 3, they overcame a 16-13 deficit with a 4-1 run to tie it at 17 and then used a five-point swing to take control at 23-18. In the fourth, they trailed 12-10 but won six of the next eight points and never trailed again.Â
Unger hit .333 and was in on five block assists as Winnipeg put up 12 total blocks as a team to MRU's five.Â
The Wesmen hit .280 for the day and held the Cougars to .080, the team's lowest attack percentage since February, 2025.Â
Luke Lodewyks added 10 kills and a match-high 11 digs, and
Aidan Hruska had eight kills with three block assists.
MRU was led by Kale Orr's 13 kills.Â
The Wesmen now head into a bye week before travelling to see the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend.Â
