The Winnipeg Wesmen took care of business to set themselves up as well as possible for the toughest stretch of their season.
Right side
Megan Kendziora hit .429 and the Wesmen hit better than .300 for the third time in four matches to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the Canada West season with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) sweep of the Mount Royal Cougars Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen have stacked much needed wins over the first two weekends of the season as they eye a run of matches against some of the conference — and country's — top teams, starting with the Trinity Western Spartans Nov. 17-18 in Langley, B.C.
And they've spent no time toying with either of their opponents, either, dropping just one set in four outings as they've temporarily stationed themselves atop the Canada West standings.
Kendziora led the way with 11 kills and just two errors while adding six digs and a block.
Brooke Duncalfe added eight kills and a team-high 13 digs and career-high five solo blocks.
The Wesmen were really only tested once all weekend and it came in the third set as they sought out a sweep weekend. MRU (0-4) opened on a 7-1 run to take control and maintained a fairly comfortable lead at 14-10 when the Wesmen found their groove again. They won six of the next eight points to tie the set at 16 and, with the score tied at 18, tore off six straight points to reach match-point status.
A Megan Jones kill kept the Cougars alive, but
Grace Vallis ended it with a kill on the next point and the Wesmen had their perfect weekend intact.
Awien Ngor again led the Cougars with seven kills but she needed 27 swings and had eight errors for a -.037 percentage.
Four Cougars players hit in negatives on the day, and MRU barely attacked in the positive, finishing at .051 as a squad.
The Wesmen will head into a bye weekend before hitting the road to B.C. They will then have four straight home matches to close out the first semester before looking ahead to 2027.
