A dominant third quarter from the Winnipeg Wesmen ripped out the hopes of an upset-minded opponent Friday night.
The Wesmen women's basketball team held the MacEwan Griffins to just two field goals in a decisive third quarter and walked away with a 69-50 Canada West conference win at the Duckworth Centre.
The Griffins, who haven't won a conference game since February 2025, were within three at halftime, but the Wesmen outscored them 21-6 and held them to 2-for-13 shooting in the third to pull away.
MacEwan (0-3) scored only three points over the final 6:45 of the period as the Wesmen used a 14-3 run to put them on their way to their second win in three conference games.
Jazmin Birch and
Jennifer Kallon led five players in double figures with 13 points apiece. Birch added seven rebounds and Kallon three steals.
Ella Castres scored 11 points off the bench,
Jennifer Edwards scored 10 with a season-high six assists, and
Ava Shaw also had 10 off the bench with five rebounds.
Winnipeg shot a conference-season high 36.4 per cent from three making 8 of 22. It was the sixth time across all games this season the Wesmen have shot at least 30 per cent from the perimeter.
MacEwan, meanwhile, made just two out of 17 from three, both of them coming from Unity Obasuyi, who finished with a game-high 21 points. She was the only Griffin in double figures.
