Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. -- The Winnipeg Wesmen had one of Quebec's top teams on the ropes, but couldn't maintain their level of play after halftime.
The Laval Rouge et Or hit nine threes after halftime and used a third-quarter run to jump ahead in an 81-66 non-conference win over the Wesmen women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Durham College.Â
Laval hit nearly 50 per cent from three after halftime as the Wesmen fell to 1-1 in their pre-season trip to Ontario.Â
But the Wesmen were very much in the mix well into the game before the Rouge et Or went off on a 9-0 late in the third quarter that broke a 40-40 tie. The Wesmen battled back to within two and trailed 55-53 with 8:29 left when Laval scored six straight and mustered a 14-5 run to push its advantage into double-digits.
Winnipeg got 26 points from its bench in falling to 1-1 in its three-game trip to Ontario. The Wesmen will face the Toronto Varsity Blues in their final game before returning home, Sunday at 12 p.m. Central.Â
Jennifer Kallon had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Wesmen. Freshman
Ella Castres was great off the bench, scoring a career-high 13 points with 3-for-4 from three and five rebounds.Â
Jazmin Birch scored 12 points and
Mattea Teece added eight.Â
The Rouge et Or were led by Emmanuelle Laurent's 26 points. She made five of seven from three.
Laval made just 3 of 12 from three in the first half but hit on nine of their 20 threes in the second half, including 6 of 10 in the fourth quarter. Â
