Wesmen on win streak after dropping Mayville State

Four Wesmen scored in double figures and two recorded double-doubles as the U of W men's basketball team posted its second straight win Saturday night.

Joseph Medrano had a game-high 22 points and the Wesmen got past the Mayville State Comets 77-67 in a non-conference game at the Duckworth Centre.

Sean Tarver posted his second straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and Adam Benrabah added 12 and 10 for the Wesmen, who will open the Canada West conference season on Friday at home against the Victoria Vikes.

Don Dayrit added 15 points – his seventh straight game to start the non-conference season in double-digit scoring.

Winnipeg outscored Mayille 24-14 in the first quarter and held a 36-25 lead heading into halftime. Mayville was able to cut the lead down with a 22-14 third quarter and trailed by just one, 68-67, with 2:37 to play before the Wesmen closed on a 9-0 run.

The Wesmen forced 14 Comets turnovers and gave up just eight of their own.

The Wesmen shot 44.6 per cent from the field, 30.3 per cent from three and 56.3 per cent from the free-throw line.

Eric Staebler and Gorg Alhag scored 14 points apiece to lead the Comets, an NAIA team from Mayville, N.D.
