York ekes out win over Wesmen in non-conference tournament

A fourth-quarter surge fell short for the Winnipeg Wesmen men's basketball team Saturday at the University of Manitoba's non-conference tournament.

Joseph Medrano had his biggest output since joining the Wesmen with 19 points, but Winnipeg couldn't find its first victory of the season in a 71-70 loss to the OUA's York Lions.

Medrano led three Wesmen players in double figures, with Don Dayrit in double digits for the fourth straight game with 14 points off the bench and Adam Benrabah, a transfer from Algoma University, adding 12 and nine rebounds.

Sean Tarver had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Wesmen, who led 20-9 after a quarter, but were outscored 31-15 in the second.

Prince Kamunga led all scorers with 26 points for the Lions, who also got 10 from DeAndrae Perre.

The Wesmen won the rebounding battle 47-33, but committed 23 turnovers to York's 12.

The Wesmen are back in action Oct. 12 for a single-game trip to Brandon to take on the Bobcats before returning home to host Dakota College and Mayville State Oct. 19-20 at the Duckworth Centre.
