Box Score Five games worth of frustration was unleashed by the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night as the women's basketball team won its first game of the Canada West season.
Faith Hezekiah and Jessica Dyck both had 16 points to lead four Wesmen players in double figures as the Wesmen hammered the MacEwan Griffins 75-34 Saturday night in Edmonton.
The Wesmen (1-5) held the Griffins to single-digit scoring in each of the first, second and third quarters in producing their stingiest defensive output since holding Brandon to 32 points in November 2012.
The win also helped the Wesmen rebound from a loss Friday night, which was MacEwan's first win of the season.
"It's been a tough stretch and it takes a toll on a team," Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay said. "Just like for them last night – they hadn't won a game and that was a big win for them. We didn't play well, but they played very well.
"We've been kind of waiting for ourselves to connect and I think we're finally going in that direction where we're connecting."
Winnipeg also forced MacEwan into 26 turnovers.
"That's what defines us. We play tough D," McKay said. "We're so athletic, but we're a different team from last year. We're still trying to find our bearings with a new point guard."
Hezekiah, who became a member of the Canada West 500 Rebound Club in a loss on Friday, had four rebounds and a game-high six steals. Farrah Castillo added 12 points and four steals, and Lena Wenke had 10 points off the bench as the Wesmen helped serve McKay her 496th career victory as head coach of the program.
Jillian Duncan had six points and a career- and team-high seven rebounds for the Wesmen, who led 15-9 after a quarter and 26-15 at the half. Winnipeg closed the game by outscoring the home team 24-6 in the fourth quarter, which included a 16-2 run to start the frame.
Darian Mahmi had nine points to lead the Griffins (1-5).
The Wesmen return home next weekend to host the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m.).
