Wesmen fall short in non-conference opener at Lakehead

Newcomer Adam Benrabah had 10 points off the bench in his first appearance as a member of the Winnipeg Wesmen, but the U of W men's basketball team dropped its first non-conference game of the season Friday in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Benrabah, a transfer from Algoma University, was one of four Wesmen in double figures in an 80-67 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Don Dayrit had 16 points off the bench to lead U of W, which held a 37-36 lead after halftime.

Sean Tarver chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds, and Narcisse Ambanza added 12 points for the Wesmen, who will play one more against the Thunderwolves Saturday before returning home.

Lakehead led 24-18 after one, and stormed ahead after half thanks to an 11-2 run that led to a 24-16 third quarter.

LU's Nick Burke had 20 points to lead all scorers, while Lock Lam added 19 and Davarius Wright 11.
