Box Score REGINA — A second-half rally and game-altering run in overtime helped the Winnipeg Wesmen score a much-needed split on the road Saturday.
Don Dayrit had 31 points and the Wesmen men's basketball team outscored the Regina Cougars by 13 in the second half and overtime to come from behind and earn a 77-69 Canada West conference victory on the road.
The win evened the team's record at 1-1 as it prepares for a home-and-home series with Manitoba next weekend.
The Wesmen trailed by seven after a quarter, 32-27 at the half and were down by as many as seven in the fourth quarter before an 11-1 run capped by two Spas Nikolov free throws with 3:02 to go gave Winnipeg the lead.
Winnipeg had a chance to win it in regulation, but Dayrit and Nikolov both missed chances in close with under 20 seconds to play. The Wesmen defended one last possession and forced overtime.
In the extra frame, the Wesmen fell behind early by three but held the Cougars to just one field over the final 3:42. Dayrit had seven points as part of a decisive 14-3 run that closed the game.
Nikolov posted another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Eric Racine had 11 points, six steals and four rebounds off the bench.
Carter Millar had 24 and 12 rebounds to lead Regina (1-1), while Benjamin Hillis had 19 and 10.
The Wesmen shot 28-for-74 from the field and were 26 per cent from three.
Winnipeg forced 22 Regina turnovers and converted them into 24 points on the night.
