After having all-star seasons,
Kato Jaro and
Brooke Duncalfe were named the 2025-26 Winnipeg Wesmen athletes of the year on Thursday.
Â
Jaro, from the Wesmen men's basketball team, and Duncalfe of women's volleyball, were both named all-stars this season and were announced as the top Wesmen athletes at the department's year-end banquet at the Radisson Hotel.Â
Â
Both Jaro and Duncalfe enjoyed breakout seasons after being handed more responsibilities as team leaders in their third seasons as Wesmen. In addition, both of them were named their respective team MVPs.Â
Â
Jaro earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-Canadian status after taking over as the starting point guard. He led the team in scoring with 14.9 points per game and was fourth in the country in assists (5.6).
Â
Duncalfe garnered her second all-Canada West honour when she was named a second-team all-star last month. Duncalfe was named to the conference all-rookie team in 2024.Â
Â
Duncalfe, a third-year left side, was tasked with the biggest workload of her career, as she stepped into the No. 1 attacking role with the Wesmen. She responded by leading the team in kills (256) and aces (23) while posting a career-high 182 digs, which ranked second on the team. Her 777 attacks in conference play were a career-high and ranked third in the nation.Â
Â
In other awards handed out,
Tristan Arnold and
Jennifer Kallon were named the most improved athletes.Â
Â
Arnold, a third-year setter on the men's volleyball team, earned a regular starting role for the first time in his career and finished top 25 in the country in assists per set.Â
Â
Kallon, a third-year forward, upped her per game averages in nearly every category and started a career-high 18 games in becoming one of the go-to players on the women's basketball team.Â
Â
Anna Filippin-Buller and
Noah Macalalad were named the Wesmen rookies of the  year. Filippin-Buller was named to the Canada West women's volleyball all-rookie team, while Macalalad flashed potential gaining early minutes in a crowded men's basketball backcourt.Â
