WVB | Planincic powers Wesmen to third-straight win

BRANDON — The Winnipeg Wesmen snapped on streak Friday while extending another.

Selva Planincic had 11 kills and eight digs to lead the Wesmen women's volleyball team to a convincing 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-15) Canada West conference victory over the Brandon Bobcats that sent the home team to its 11th straight loss to start the season.

In the process, the Wesmen won their third straight match while snapping a three-game slide against BU that dates back to the end of last season.

Planincic hit .364 and also had an ace and two block assists for a match-high 13 points. Emma Parker had nine kills, a match-high 13 digs and hit .304. Middle blocker Haille Bujan managed seven kills on 14 swings with just one error.

Planincic served the Wesmen through an early seven-point run in the first set that swung things quickly in Winnipeg's favour. The Wesmen took a 4-4 tie and turned it to 11-4 with Planincic on the line with an ace and four kills from the visitors.

The Wesmen closed the set on another seven-point run, closing things out with Ashleigh Laube taking the service line with the score 18-9.

In Set 2, the Wesmen trailed 11-8 before scoring three straight points to equalize and then, after BU briefly went ahead 12-11, tearing off a five-point run to go ahead 16-12.

The third set was more of the same in Winnipeg's favour with an 8-2 start to the set putting the Bobcats in the back seat right away. The Wesmen led by as many as 10 points in the decisive third.

Avery Burgar led the Bobcats with 11 kills while Brianne Stott and Keely Anderson both had 10 digs.
