Box Score DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics
This time, the Winnipeg Wesmen spared their supporters the theatrics.
The Wesmen women's basketball team hit a season-high from three and, one night after needing a last-second shot to escape with a win, this time built a lead and hung on for a comfortable 77-68 Canada West conference victory over the Regina Cougars Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.
On Friday, the Wesmen needed a series of unprecedented events and a Kyanna Giles layup with 0.4 seconds on the clock to eke out a win.
Saturday was a different story.
Winnipeg opened a 40-30 lead at half thanks to a last-second Faith Hezekiah three before the break and led by as many as 13 in the third quarter. The Cougars were never able to get closer than five.
Hezekiah, playing her final game at the Duckworth Centre, led the Wesmen with 22 points and was 4-for-4 from the three-point line. The Wesmen as a team hit a season-high 15 threes and finished 15-for-27 from behind the arc.
Anna Kernaghan had 15 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals as the Wesmen improved to 13-1 on the year and kept pace with the Saskatchewan Huskies in the East Division.
Keylyn Filewich, the team's other fifth-year senior, scored 12 points with seven rebounds and six assists, and Robyn Boulanger dropped 11.
Dayna Pearce led Regina (6-8) with 18 points and was 5-for-6 from three. Jade Belmore added 15 points and eight rebounds, and Faith Read and Cara Misskey both had 11 points.
