Box Score SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen aren't scared of overtime in Saskatoon.
Don Dayrit scored a season-high 34 points and the Wesmen men's basketball team went to overtime for the third time in three games played in the province of Saskatchewan, defeating the host Huskies 90-85 Friday night.
The Wesmen are now 2-1 in overtime games this season — all of which have been played in the neighbouring province. The Wesmen lost a double-OT game to start the season in Regina and followed that with an overtime win the next night.
And Friday's win was all the more meaningful given that it gave the Wesmen (8-7) an added cushion over fourth-place Manitoba in the East Division but, more importantly, gave them extra steady footing in the overall seeding of the Canada West conference. The Wesmen moved up to seventh in the conference with the win.
It was also the first win for the Wesmen in Saskatoon since Nov. 12, 2016.
Dayrit scored 12 third-quarter points and hit for another seven in overtime to lead the Wesmen. He finished with a career-high six steals and added five assists as well.
The Wesmen trailed 8-2 out of the gates and faced a 25-18 deficit after a quarter. The Wesmen, however, chipped away and took their first lead of the game at 35-34 on a Donte Makazu layup with 3:39 to go in the first half.
They went into half down 42-40.
After taking the lead on a Josh Gandier three followed by a Dayrit three to start the third quarter, the Wesmen would trail just once the rest of the way.
Shawn Maranan added 11 points for the Wesmen, who also got nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds off the bench from Emmanuel Thomas.
Marquavian Stephens led the Huskies (10-4) with 27 points and Alexander Dewar added 23. Maxwell Amaofo had a game-high 16 rebounds.
