Box Score SASKATOON — A cold second half proved to be the unraveling of the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night.
The Wesmen women's basketball team was held to 12 second-half points — four in the fourth quarter — and dropped a 54-42 Canada West conference decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The result left the Wesmen (11-2) in second place behind the Huskies (12-1) in the East Division with the season finale Saturday night.
Winnipeg, which led for most of the first half and went into the break up 30-25, went stone cold in the second shooting 15 per cent in the final 20 minutes while enduring multiple lengthy stretches without a field goal.
It was the program's lowest output since scoring 41 in a loss at Calgary, Nov. 12, 2017.
Winnipeg, however, was held to just eight points in the third quarter and scored just two points in the first 5:23 of the second half.
On the other hand, the Wesmen were able to keep the Huskies relatively at bay for the same stretch, holding Saskatchewan to just three points in the first 5:46 as the visitors lead temporarily stretched to six on an Anna Kernaghan jumper.
Tied at 38 after three, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run over the first 5:23 of the fourth quarter. A Kernaghan jumper put a stop to that, but a Keylyn Filewich layup with 2:06 remaining represented the only other points the Wesmen were able to muster.
Filewich finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, the only Winnipeg player in double digits in either stat.
The Wesmen shot 25.7 per cent from the field and were 2-for-22 from three.
Saskatchewan wasn't much better, shooting 29.7 per cent and 5-for-27 from three. The Huskies, however, made a couple of big threes when it really mattered with Carly Alhstrom hitting back-to-back triples as part of that fourth-quarter run.
Ahlstrom finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Libby Epoch added 16 points.
