Box Score SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen will continue their 2021-22 campaign and they'll do it in Edmonton next weekend.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team learned its fate Saturday after a 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 16-25, 25-16) Canada West conference loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies wrapped up its regular season.
The Wesmen fell to 6-10 on the season, but thanks to getting one set win they were able to secure a tiebreak over the Manitoba Bisons for the third and final playoff spot coming out of the East Division. The Bisons will be a wild card.
Winnipeg was victimized by a 10-point run in the first set in which the Huskies went from tied at 10 to up 20-10.
In the second set, the Wesmen trailed by three early on but managed to eventually pull even at 21-21. Saskatchewan, however, would win four of the next five points, finishing on a kill by Averie Allard.
The Wesmen were able to get a quick run of points in the third set, taking an 8-7 lead and building it to 12-8. The Wesmen closed on a run of four out of five points to keep the match alive.
In the fourth, however, the Huskies hit .325 and held Winnipeg to .111 to improve to 14-2 on the season.
"We had a strong match out of our middle players today and Emma Parker was excellent in all facets of the game," head coach Phil Hudson said. "I'm proud of how the team competed over the entire weekend against one of the top teams in Canada West."
For the second straight night, Emma Parker had 22 kills to pace the Wesmen, who also got 12 kills and 15 digs from Ashleigh Laube. Taylor Cangemi tied for a match-high with 17 digs, and Selva Planincic had seven kills, 10 digs and two aces.
