HALIFAX — The Winnipeg Wesmen season came to an end Saturday with a consolation loss at the Final 8.
Shawn Maranan had a bounce-back game and
Mikhail Mikhailov posted a double-double, but the Wesmen men's basketball fell short in a 90-85 double-overtime defeat in the consolation semifinal to the Quebec-Montreal Citadins at the Scotiabank Centre.
The Wesmen were making their first appearance at nationals since 1993-94.
Maranan, who was held to two points in a quarter-final loss to Ottawa a day earlier, scored 20 points to lead the Wesmen, and Mikhailov posted 19 points and 15 rebounds.
But the Wesmen weren't able to close the deal in the fourth quarter. They led 63-52 going into the final regulation period, but the Citadins outscored the Wesmen 20-9 in the final 10 minutes.
"I was proud of their effort," Wesmen head coach
Mike Raimbault said. "Yesterday was an emotional day, and then to bounce back and play the early one here today I thought our level of effort was where we wanted it to be, and I was certainly proud of the way we continued to fight through the overtime periods to the final buzzer."
The Wesmen had a mini-rally in the first overtime, battling back from five points down to tie it at 77. They led 79-77 after a
Ryan Luke layup with 1:27 to go but weren't able to score the rest of the way and UQAM was able to force a second overtime. Winnipeg fell behind by five again in OT No. 2, but weren't able to get closer than two.
Luke came off the bench and scored 14 points with five rebounds and
Alberto Gordo had 11 points and eight rebounds.
UQAM, which will play Queen's in the consolation final Sunday, was led by Bahaide Haidara, who scored 31 points. Elie Karojo had 11 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
