WVB | Wesmen can't close out Cougars

The Winnipeg Wesmen fell victim to a reverse sweep Friday in their first home action in three weeks.

The Regina Cougars rallied from two sets down and handed the Wesmen women's volleyball team a 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-12) defeat in Canada West conference play at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen fell to 1-4 on the season while a resurgent Regina squad, which had won just four matches over the past two seasons combined, improved to 3-4 early in the 2024-25 campaign.

Winnipeg looked dominant through the first two sets and made it seem like it was going to be a quick night of work, hitting .343 in the first set and building up a seven-point lead at one point in the first and opening on a 5-0 run in the second. Regina was held -.111 in the second set, committing nine attack errors with just five kills.

But the Cougars rebounded with a scorching .500 efficiency in the third while the Wesmen suddenly found themselves battling errors. Winnipeg made 21 attack errors over the course of the third and fourth sets and hit -.058 in that stretch.

The Wesmen briefly looked to swing control of the match back their way in the fifth, scoring the first three points of the set and holding a lead up to 6-5. Regina, however, rallied off three straight at that point and later broke an 8-8 tie with five straight to put Winnipeg on the brink.

The Wesmen had one last push in them as they won four of the next five points to cut the lead down to 14-12, but a Cassadi Klapak kill finished the match.

Brooke Duncalfe recorded her first double-double of the season to lead the Wesmen with 13 kills and 12 digs while Jaya Dzikowicz added 12 kills and three of Winnipeg's season-high 10 aces.

Taylor Cangemi had a season- and match-high 17 digs and Selva Planincic had 10.

Regina was led by Devyn Grimsrud's 14 kills and 14 digs.
