Shawn Maranan hit a key three-pointer with under two minutes to go and the Winnipeg Wesmen downed the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets 76-68 Monday in an exhibition game at the Duckworth Centre.
Maranan finished with 22 points including a triple with 1:55 to go that pushed a four-point lead to seven and allowed the Wesmen men's basketball team to pull away for a victory over the NCAA Division II Jackets.
Black Hills trailed for the final 35:07 of the game but never trailed by more than nine and, twice in the fourth quarter, got the lead inside five. With 5:43 to go in the fourth, Jaeton Hackley scored in the paint to cut it to 63-61 before the Wesmen scored back-to-back buckets to push it back up to six while holding the Yellow Jackets without a point for the next 3:26.
John Shanklin made a layup to get it to 67-63 with 2:17 left before Maranan hit his three and eventually forced BHSU into fouling.Â
The Wesmen took the lead for good on a
Ryan Luke three with 5:07 to go in the first quarter that made it 14-11. The closest Black Hills would get from there on would be 20-19 on a buzzer-beating three from Dawson Mohr to end the first quarter.Â
Donald Stewart had 13 points in 17 minutes and made 3-for-4 from three for the Wesmen, who finished 12 of 22 from the perimeter.
Elijah Mensah scored seven first-half points and finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.Â
Jack Haggett led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points off the bench and. Caelin Heame added 12 and Hackley finished with 10.Â
