Three out of four Wesmen teams were in action on the weekend as non-conference play continued in the lead up to Canada West conference openers later this month.
Here's a rundown of results from the past few days for the Wesmen:
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen opened their non-conference season with three wins in four matches at the Bobcats tournament in Brandon.Â
Winnipeg opened the tournament Thursday afternoon with a straight-sets victory over the Manitoba Bisons before dropping a three-setter to the host Bobcats on Friday. The Wesmen rebounded later in the day by outlasting the Saskatchewan Huskies in a five-set victory.Â
Saturday the team wrapped up the tournament with its second sweep, taking down the OUA's McMaster Marauders in three.Â
The Wesmen will return home for their own pre-season tournament Oct. 16-18 when it hosts Brandon, Windsor, Calgary and Volleyball Canada's NEP Team.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
After a 2-1 trip to Ontario, the Wesmen earned a split in Regina that included a dramatic Sunday afternoon game against the host Cougars.
On Saturday,
Jennifer Kallon scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed four steals as the Wesmen beat the Lethbridge Pronghorns 66-62 at the Cougar Classic.Â
Kallon made 6 of 8 from the field, including three three-pointers, as the Wesmen improved to 3-1 in non-conference play.
Jazmin Birch added 10 points, and
Sarah Boitson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
On Sunday, the Wesmen nearly pulled off an upset, dropping an 83-80 overtime decision to Regina. Birch's shot at the buzzer forced overtime as the Wesmen overcame a 13-point deficit in the final four minutes.Â
Winnipeg was down 76-71 with 20 seconds left before
Ava Shaw hit a three and the Wesmen benefited from two missed Regina free throws on the ensuing possession.Â
Birch finished with 19 points, Kallon 14 and
Raia Guinto 10. Boitson pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in the loss.Â
The Wesmen will host the four-team CJOB Shootout this weekend at the Duckworth Centre with Briercrest, Brandon and Manitoba attending.Â
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen got a good look at some of the top teams in Canada West in a road trip to the West Coast.
The Wesmen opened the series with a close four-set loss to the UBC Thunderbirds, who finished 17-3 a season ago.
Ella Werbiski led the way with eight kills and three blocks.
Anna Filippin-Buller added six kills and two aces, and
Grace Vallis chipped in with five kills and three blocks.
Winnipeg rallied to beat the Fraser Valley Cascades in its next match, with
Megan Kendziora scoring seven kills in a three-set win.
Brooke Duncalfe had four kills and three aces, and Werbiski had four kills and seven digs.
The Wesmen closed out with two tough five-set losses, first to the Western Mustangs of the OUA and Sunday against the Trinity Western Spartans.Â
Filippin-Buller led the way against TWU with nine kills and five digs. Vallis had six kills with four blocks and Lakehead transfer
Ashley Lawrence had eight digs.  Â
