Jaro earns first all-star, named Canada West first-team

For the first time in his career, Kato Jaro is a conference all-star.

Jaro, the third-year Winnipeg Wesmen guard was named first-team all-Canada West as the conference unveiled its men's basketball all-star teams for the 2025-26 season.

After playing behind and alongside former Wesmen all-star Shawn Maranan for his first two seasons, Jaro had a breakout year as the team's starting point guard in his junior year.

He led a balanced Wesmen team in scoring with 14.9 points per game and was one of the top distributors in the nation, ranking fourth in U Sports and third in Canada West with 5.6 assists per game as Winnipeg posted its second straight 16-4 season.

Jaro started in all 19 conference games in which he appeared, ranking fifth in the country in minutes played (33.6) while posting a career-high 87.1 per cent rate at the free throw line, a career-high.

The No. 3-ranked Wesmen qualified as the No. 1 seed in the Canada West playoffs and will host the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday (7:30 p.m.) in a conference semifinal with a berth in nationals on the line.
