Wesmen Beat Huskies In Overtime, Split Weekend Series

Box Score

Sean Tarver hit a game-tying three-pointer with 22 seconds left and the Winnipeg Wesmen prevailed in overtime to earn a split in Saskatoon.

Tarver finished with 21 and hit 4 of 7 from three as the Wesmen rallied to beat the Saskatchewan Huskies 96-92 in overtime Saturday night.

Tarver's triples were a part of a big night from beyond for Winnipeg, which hit 17 of 34 shots from three.

The Wesmen trailed by 10 at half and were down by as many as 16 in the second half before battling back. A Denzel Lynch-Blair bucket with 3:17 left in regulation gave Winnipeg its first lead of the game, 82-81, and after going up 84-81 on a Lynch-Blair dunk with 1:22 to go, the Wesmen gave up the next six points, setting up Tarver's big play.

After falling behind 90-89 with 2:56 left in overtime, the Wesmen took the lead for good on a Ryan Oirbans hoop on the next possession, and held Saskatchewan scoreless for more than two minutes.

"I was really proud of the guys for sticking together and continuing to work through adversity tonight," Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault said. "Guys made big plays and multiple people contributed to a solid team win."

Will Sesay, who had the assist on Tarver's game-tying shot, finished with 20 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Marcello Kambola knocked down five three-pointers off the bench and finished with 17 points, and Lynch-Blair dropped 11.

Winnipeg improved to 3-1 on the season after losing Friday night's contest.

Saskatchewan, led by Shane Osayande's 23 points and 17 rebounds, fell to 2-2 on the season.

The win allowed the Wesmen to remain in the top half of the Canada West, with a record that is one game better than both their provincial rivals Brandon and Manitoba.

The Wesmen return home for two key conference clashes Friday and Saturday against Lethbridge, which is also 3-1 following a split against Mount Royal this weekend.
