Wesmen focus shifts after loss to T-Birds

Box Score

BY DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics

The Winnipeg Wesmen are going to try to forget the last three days ever happened.

It has been a pretty dreadful bout of bad luck around the men's volleyball team, and it culminated Saturday in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) loss to the No. 3-ranked UBC Thunderbirds, the U of W's fifth straight conference loss.

The Wesmen (10-6) were swept in the two-match weekend series after starters David Bommersbach and Taylor Howe went down to injury in the same practice Thursday afternoon.

But middle blocker Ethan Duncan said all the team can do now is focus forward on the next challenge, a date with the crosstown rival Manitoba Bisons Thursday night.

"We're gonna wipe away this weekend, we're gonna forget about it," Duncan said. "We've seen Manitoba twice already, so we know how they play, we know how we play. This weekend's completely done with. We'll focus on Manitoba."

Adrian Dyck led the Wesmen with seven kills, and middle blocker Garrett Jones had four kills on seven swings for a team-high .429 attack percentage. Winnipeg hit just .096 as a team.

"We did as best as we can. Some guys needed to step up, as a team we all needed to step up, and in some aspects of the game we did, and in some aspects we struggled a little bit," Duncan said.

Fynn McCarthy had a match-high eight kills and five digs for the Thunderbirds (14-2), who won their third straight and seventh of their last eight.

UBC posted 10 service aces to Winnipeg's two, a stat not lost on Duncan.

"They outserved us," Duncan said. "Our serving compared to theirs, they were exceptional compared to us. Honestly, I think that was one of the biggest factors."

Winnipeg hosts Manitoba as part of the Duckworth Challenge with first serve Thursday slated for 7:45 p.m.
