Wesmen on the ropes after loss at UBC

Box Score

The Winnipeg Wesmen are getting into must-win territory as the Canada West conference season winds down.

Daniel Thiessen had his fourth 20-kill match of the season, but the Wesmen men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22) decision to the UBC Thunderbirds Friday in Vancouver.

Thiessen had a team-high 20 kills, hit .310 for the match and added seven digs for the Wesmen, who are two points back of UBC for the eighth and final playoff spot. The two teams meet again Saturday with UBC holding an edge on the first tiebreaker — sets won/sets lost. The Wesmen have two matches at home against Alberta next weekend, while UBC heads to Calgary.

Ethan Duncan had 11 kills and hit .381 while adding four blocks for the Wesmen.

Matt Neaves led UBC with 20 kills and Michael Dowhaniuk added 19.

Winnipeg's Adrian Dyck and UBC's Ben Hooker both had a match-high nine digs.

The Wesmen hit .277 for the match while T-Birds hit .259.
